SENIOR WELLNESS SCREENING

Pets are living longer than ever before due to better pet foods, preventative health care, and advances in veterinary medicine. It is no longer unusual to see a 15 year old Golden Retriever or an 18 year old cat. As your pet ages, organ function may begin to deteriorate. The purpose of wellness testing is to detect and treat these problems at an early stage. In many cases early treatment may extend the length and quality of a pet’s life. Maintaining the health of your senior pet also consists of preventative dental care to inhibit the infection from periodontal disease, a bacterial infection that affects the soft tissue and bones supporting the teeth, from affecting the heart, liver, and kidneys. More than 85% of dogs and cats over four years old have some form of periodontal disease.

WHO QUALIFIES?

The senior wellness program is recommended for all patients over four years of age, and patients of any age that are exhibiting signs of illness such as increased thirst and/or urination, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, poor hair coat, seizures, or unusual behavior. Some pets may not show signs and symptoms until problems have progressed to an advanced stage, therefore early detection is crucial.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

• EKG
• Blood Chemistry
• Thyroid Panel
• CBC (Complete Blood Count)
• Urinalysis
• Fecal and Giardia (for intestinal parasites)
• Complete physical exam by the doctor
• Prostate check for male dogs

ANESTHESIA FOR SENIOR PETS

Our staff is aware that often one of the biggest concerns for owners with senior pets is anesthesia; therefore we do not take the risks associated with anesthesia lightly. These concerns should not prevent your pet from receiving proper care and should be discussed in detail with a member of our staff.
